Over 80% of global trade is transported by sea. However, the shipping industry accounts for approximately 3% of global carbon emissions. This is where biofuels come in, emerging as a promising alternative to traditional fossil fuels in the transport sector and offering a potential pathway to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and move towards a more sustainable future.

What are Biofuels?

Biofuels are a renewable energy source produced from organic waste, vegetable oils or algae. They have a much lower carbon footprint than fossil fuels. In shipping, biofuels can be used directly in ship engines or blended with existing fuels for operational convenience. Although they produce carbon emissions when converted into fuel and used, they do not create additional emissions because they only release the carbon dioxide they absorbed before being converted into fuel.

This cycle enables biofuels to achieve carbon neutrality. When animal waste is used as biomass, it creates recycling opportunities and also contributes to carbon sequestration. Thanks to this cycle, biofuels achieve carbon neutrality. When animal waste is also used as biomass, it creates recycling opportunities and provides an efficient source of biofuel.

Why is it important and why is it preferred?

Cleaner atmosphere: CO₂ and particulate emissions are significantly reduced.

Ease of adaptation: Does not require major engine modifications.

Regulatory support: Complies with IMO 2050 targets.

Company image: Creates a ‘green ship’ perception.

Energy Security: Reduces dependence on external sources through local production.

What About the Challenges?

• High cost.

• Supply is still limited.

• Types that compete with food production can lead to environmental debates.

Biofuels are seen as a bridge fuel solution for the sustainable future of the shipping industry. While fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia will gain importance in the long term, biofuels are today's solution.
